Settled in Kansas today

In an unsettling sort of way... Sept 30, 2014

Makes you wonder about staying the night

This morning at about 9:30 I crossed the state line into Kansas. I have been excited to see the billboard stating "Welcome to Kansas" but it wasn't there. Not where I crossed over. Of course I'm sometimes traveling roadways other than freeways and so it was that I was greeted by another sign. One that told me exactly where I was (sort of speak). Not as impressive but certainly worked.

I have made another profound observation. At least in my little mind. As the landscape changes while I travel west so does the road kill. Yes that's right the road kill. I know... who thinks of that?  From Maine to Kansas I've seen skunks to raccoons in New England to small deer and tires strewn all over the roads of Pennsylvania. moving into Ohio and Indiana I see opossom and fox and here in southern Missouri & Kansas there are more armadillos and coy dogs. I must say that the "trucking" traffic hasn't let up much. Diesel fuel must be cheaper out here just like the gasoline. Today I paid $3.09 per gallon. sounds like a bargain but your tank doesn't take 80 gallons to fill up now does it? The highlight of the day was the wild herd of american bison that I found on a range protecting them from harm and wandering onto the highways. They are free range and live on 2,200 acres near Canton, Kansas. Also today I found the old Historic Route 66 and followed it for miles until I had to turn away to make my destination.  And the weather fluctuates more than in does in Maine. Storm clouds come up quickly and then disappear just as fast. It was a very breezy day and forecasts are for heavy rain and thunderstorms tonight. This campground has two "storm shelters" on the premises. Goodnight all... I'll be up all night ;) ~Link to Photos~
